Two worries come up more than almost any others before a first Ceremony: crying in front of people I just met, and the part people call purging. Emotional release in Ceremony often raises questions and uncertainty, so let me speak plainly about both, because knowing what they are tends to soften the fear.
Tears, laughter, stillness
Emotional release takes many shapes. Tears are common. So is laughter. So is long, quiet stillness. For people who have spent years keeping it together, the simple permission to feel can be the whole medicine.
Think of it as a backlog moving. A pressure you have held for a long time finally finding its way out. In a safe, held space, with people who stay steady beside you, that release becomes possible, often for the first time in years.
The purge, honestly
With some medicines, especially Ayahuasca, the body sometimes releases physically, through tears, through the stomach, through trembling. In this tradition, the purge is understood as part of the release itself, the body letting go of something it has held.
Most people describe what follows as profound relief. And it is far from universal. With mushrooms it is uncommon, and a good team prepares you for exactly what to expect from the plant medicine you will be working with.
Why release heals
Some pain is stored below language, in the nervous system. It responds less to explanation and more to being felt all the way through. Emotional release is that feeling-through, happening at last in a place safe enough to allow it.
A question worth sitting with: what have I held back from feeling all the way through?
With love,
Danny
Common questions
Will I purge on ayahuasca?
Purging is far from universal. Some people release physically, many do not, and with mushrooms it is uncommon. In this tradition, if it happens, it is understood as part of the release, and your team prepares you for what to expect.
Is crying in ceremony normal?
Very. Tears, laughter, and stillness are all common forms of release. For many people, the permission to finally feel is where the real healing begins.
What if I am someone who holds it together and rarely cries?
That is welcome too. Release looks different for everyone, and some of the deepest shifts happen quietly. The space holds whatever wants to move, in whatever form it takes.
