There is a particular kind of person I meet at almost every retreat. They have done more work on themselves than most people do in a lifetime. Therapy. Books. Modalities. Years of honest, courageous effort. Still wonder why you still feel emotional pain despite everything they have done to heal.

And they still carry an old pain, usually an emotional one, that none of that work could reach.

They know exactly what happened and why it shaped them. They can trace the thread from childhood to now with real precision. The weight comes from knowing the whole story and still feeling the pain anyway. If that describes you, this is for you.

What the mind understands, the body still holds

You can understand exactly what happened to you and why, and still feel it living in your body. A tightness. A flinch. A bracing that holds on even when you are safe.

Some experiences are stored below language, in the nervous system, in places that talking can struggle to reach. This is the gap between what the mind understands and what the body still holds, and it is one of the most exhausting places to live.

Plant Medicine tends to move at that level, the body’s level. This is why people often release what years of understanding alone left untouched.

The quiet tax of looking fine

Carrying old pain while living a full life is exhausting, and almost no one says it out loud. The meetings still happen. The people who need you still need you. From the outside, things look intact.

But there is a tax on that. A quiet, constant expenditure of energy just to keep functioning while something underneath stays unresolved. Most people call that tiredness something else: being busy, or stressed, or just how things are.

I have sat with enough people to recognize it. It is the specific tiredness of someone who has been holding the same pain for a very long time.

Why old patterns can finally update

Here is a hopeful piece of the science. After these experiences, the brain shows increased plasticity, a window where it forms new connections more readily and loosens old ones. Patterns that felt permanent can become workable.

For someone carrying an old wound, that matters. “This is just how I am” may be far more changeable than it feels. The nervous system can learn something new.

If you cry, you are doing it right

Tears are common in this work. So is laughter. So is stillness. For people who have spent years keeping it together, the permission to finally feel can be the whole medicine.

Emotional release is a backlog moving, a long-held pressure finding its way out. In a safe, held space, with people who stay steady beside you, that release becomes possible, often for the first time in a long time.

Safety is what lets you open

Healing requires safety. We release most easily in the places where we feel most protected. This is why skilled facilitators matter so much, and why, for many, having women holding space is part of feeling safe enough to open, especially when the wound being touched is tender.

Being truly held, with one purpose only, your safety, is rare and precious. It is also where the deepest release becomes possible.

You are allowed to heal early

A quiet myth keeps people away: the idea that this work is only for people who are falling apart. The truth is wider. Carrying something old and tired is reason enough. So is simply wanting to feel more free.

You are allowed to tend to a wound while it is still small, long before it becomes an emergency.

A question worth sitting with this week: where do I still brace, even when I am safe?

If you have understood your pain completely and still feel it, that is worth paying attention to. Supporting people through that last stretch, before, during, and after a Ceremony, is the work we do.

With love,

Danny

Common questions

Why do I still feel my trauma after years of therapy?

Some experiences are stored below language, in the nervous system, where talking can struggle to reach. You can understand exactly what happened and still feel it bracing in your body. Plant Medicine tends to work at that body level, which is why people often release what understanding alone left untouched.

How does Plant Medicine help release trauma from the body?

In a safe, held space, the Medicine reaches the places you have been protecting and lets a long-held pressure move, often through tears, trembling, or stillness. Afterward the brain stays unusually plastic for weeks, a window where old patterns can finally update.

Is a psilocybin or ayahuasca retreat safe if I have a trauma history?

This work suits some people and is wrong for others, which is why careful screening is a green flag. A reputable, trauma-informed retreat asks about your health and history first, and many people find that having women holding space is part of feeling safe enough to open.
